Yup, you’ve heard it right but there is always a price to pay.
The hack requires guts by opening your phone’s guts and it will only downgrade the firmware to v. 1.1.2 then jail-breaking it, meaning you’re better of buying the phone with 1.1.2 firmware if you need to unlock it.

UPDATE: GIZMODO claims that they managed to unbrick IPhones that were bricked from previous firmware (1.1.1/1.1.2), by recovering and upgrading the phone to 1.1.3 via an active ITunes account !? check it out ..
