My Special Router – The CloakBox
31 Aug 2009 8 CommentsI used Hotspot shield regularly during the last year or two, to access Hulu and any other website that needed me to be in the US. But it had its drawbacks, it’s public, so not much for security there, a bit slow and it can be used only on a PC or Mac.

I really wanted something similar for my Xbox 360 and PS3, so that I can download all the stuff that I want without restrictions, even certain game add-ons can’t be downloaded.

This is where The CloakBox comes in, it is basically a regular router that uses a VPN that utilizes multiple gateways located in the UK and the US to access the internet, so your ip would look like you are in the US, from there the possibilities are endless.

I’ve just used it with my media center PC to access Hulu and Netflix, I streamed TV shows and movies it works pretty good. I have a 2 MB connection, and I think I need to upgrade to 4 MB so that I really can use these services. They work fine but, like Netflix for instance, it tests your internet connection and decides the video quality according to your connection, 2 MB is considered low in the US and video quality is usually crappy for that reason.
VPNs usually are slow, during my test I had different results, my test without CloakBox:

So upgrading the speed should really help, also will try using it with the PS3 and Netflix via Xbox 360.
The CloakBox costs $200, thats the hardware+one year subscription to the service. The service is $100 thereafter.
