Why is Flickr Blocked in The UAE

Flickr Blocked

I got the image above when I tried to access flickr during my stay in Dubai. I have no idea why would flickr be blocked, it just makes no sense. I thought they just might be religiously strict so I tried to  access a gambling site, and I did.

And just to make sure that I didn’t just access a site that just wasn’t blocked, giving them the benefit of the doubt (even though that the word casino might have been on top of their list) I tried again, with the first Google result for the search “online gambling”.

So if its not religious, what is it?

    Flickr has adult content. Last week, I purchased a pay as you go mobile Internet package from Vodafone UK. They also had flickr blocked by default. I had to go to their store to verify my age and have the block removed.

    In the UAE their is another twist I guess, just look at what the kids are using it for over there and you could get the reasoning behind the block. I could never understand how kids in the UAE turned flickr into a cheesy social network site with other sites around like facebook, myspace, hi5 etc.

    Even if it has adult content so do a lot of other sites, and blocking social networking isn’t going to stop these kids.

    Blocking isn’t a solution, and Flickr has a lot more to give then it to do any damage!
