Why I’m not getting the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

23 Jun 2011  10 Comments

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 went on sale on Amazon about 5 days ago. I almost got one before really thinking it through. I realized that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 has a number of disadvantages:

1) No Micro SD Card Slot:

One of the main uses of the tablet for me is to watch videos on the go. And I already hate the way my iPad/2 manages videos as I have to connect the device to a PC every time I want a new file or I have to delete stuff if I’m running out of space.16/32GB wont cut it.

2) No Full Size USB Port:

This is a a major drawback. As most of the new Android tablet come with at least one port. The Asus EEE Pad Transformer has 2 using the keyboard dock but 0 on the tablet itself.
With the 3.1 update I would love to play some games using my PS3 controller.

Also for a not so apparent reason, NVIDIA already showing off their Tegra 3 quad-core CPU/12 Core GPU and 5 times the performance of Tegra 2. And reports are saying that they should be available by the end of the year and as early as September.

Other than that, the Android tablets that are available at the moment are great. You can also check out the Acer Iconia and the Asus Transformer.

Thats what I was thinking too! Mostly because of the Tegra 3, and the tablets now are good but the next ones coming up will be a lot better. And I want a pad with at least 128 GB! I want the space to dump a ton of shows!

Marzouq, you might be the only person in the world when I say “You can never have enough storage” to, I really mean it :)

There’s a usb adapter for the Tab 10.1 as well as card readers… I’m getting it regardless, although I got really upset for the lack of a built-in card reader.

    USB adapter: http://www.electronista.com/articles/11/06/16/dongle.enables.usb.accessories.extra.storage/

    Hope this helps :)

It good descision IF only IF your willing to wait another year for the new tablets with the Tegra3 processors. If not the samsung 10.1 is the best tablet out there, that has no disadvantage that can’t be taken care of. Compared to the Asus transformer, the Asus has a USB and micro sd slot but it has lower quality screen and weaker speaker. You can get an adapter for those ( sucks to carry adapters but better than having a weak speaker)

The 10.1 is a wonderful device, but quad-core devices might arrive as early as September. I think it would be a good idea to wait.

Let us know how the 10.1 feels after a few days of use :)

I’ve got the samsung tab 10.1 for a few days know. It’s great but not flawless. Had some apps crash or freeze on me, including the default browser. I haven’t tried opera nor firefox browser yet.
In these few days Ive played a few games (including emulators), surfed the web and downloaded torrents and played mkv (video file) with embedded subtitle. And I think its a good gadget certainly not a laptop replacement.
Its heavy (not physically, ;-) ) when playing flash video on the browser on websites like novamov and videoweed, it plays the video well but it becomes slow to respond when pressing the play or close ad button.
Live wallpaper is amazing installed asus my water wallpaper, solar system 3D anipet aquarium.

ONE THING NOT TO EXPECT IS IT RUNNING AS SMOOTH AS YOUR LAPTOP
I have interactive live wallpaper and I haven’t used task killer because i forget to use it. It would improve performance and battery life to do the opposite. :-)

One last thing that sucks about android (not galaxy 10.1) is that it doesnt support java.

For those who dont want to wait to feb or march for the tegra3 processor this is the best tablet out there IMO!

I totally agree with points one and two. I was about to go out and buy one and did a quick check of the reviews first. No USB, No SD, then Cash from me.

  • UDID Activation

iOS 5 is pretty cool I wonder what they will add with iOS 6 beta and I wonder if I’ll need a UDID activation / registration for it like I got on http://www.iosudids.com they have pretty cool blog post on what we might expect with the iOS 6 beta too check it out http://iosudids.blogspot.com/

And because Tegra3 has a integrated crypto system which is basically evil deception of costumers, because the device will never really be theirs.
And Tegra2 is a unusable piece of chunk which obviously never has been tested before it left the factory…
Only buy devices with OMAP inside, I learned a lot…
