Smashburger – Impression

Smash Burger Kuwait 1

Yesterday we went to try out the newly opened Smashburger in The Village in Abo AlHasani. It adds yet another burger place to an impressive burger joints here in Kuwait.

It is the same as the other top tier burger places where they serve fresh ingredients and bun. I was intrigued by the “Kuwait Burger” but after reading that it had Lebnah in it I decided to go with something else so I got the classic which was pretty good. I also liked the rosemary “Smash Fries”.

I still prefer Shake Shack and Elevation Burger over Smashburger, but it is battling with Fat Burger for the 3rd spot. Little Ruby’s has excellent burgers as well. I have a problem with its location though as its easily crowded and somewhat far. It is located right next to Upper Crust, another place I haven’t tried yet.

An Embarrassment on A Global Scale: Playing Borat’s National Anthem Here in Kuwait

24 Mar 2012  2 Comments

Kazakhstan’s shooting team has been left stunned after a comedy national anthem from the film Borat was played at a medal ceremony at championships in Kuwait instead of the real one.

I don’t know whether to die of laughter or feel ashamed. This is a catastrophe, I have no idea how can you mix those two up unless you were told to Google “Kazakhstan National Anthem” and he mistakenly selected the second video. But brings another question, shouldn’t they have a library of all the national anthems and flags since they are hosting an international event?

The Kazakhstani team has asked for an apology and they really deserve one. The organizers also got the Serbian national anthem wrong according to the Kazakhstani coach.

When you are on the pedestal and the song says: Kazakhstan’s prostitutes cleanest in the region” I would take offence.

Just for kicks, here is the full spoof anthem from the movie Borat:

Kazakhstan greatest country in the world. All other countries are run by little girls. Kazakhstan number one exporter of potassium.

Other countries have inferior potassium. Kazakhstan home of Tinshein swimming pool. It’s length thirty meter and width six meter. Filtration system a marvel to behold. It remove 80 percent of human solid waste.

Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan you very nice place. From Plains of Tarashek to Norther fence of Jewtown. Kazakhstan friend of all except Uzbekistan. They very nosey people with bone in their brain.

Kazakhstan industry best in the world. We incented toffee and trouser belt. Kazakhstan’s prostitutes cleanest in the region. Except of course Turkmenistan’s.

Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan you very nice place. From Plains of Tarashek to Norther fence of Jewtown. Come grasp the might phenis of our leader. From junction with the testes to tip of its face!

Brown Diamond 1

When I was at Proud to be Kuwaiti last week, my wife bought a box of chocolates from a place called Brown Diamond. They offer small cubed-shaped chocolate and marshmallow pieces that are absolutely wonderful. I really enjoyd them and simply could stop stuffing my self with them.

The box has 1/2 a kilogram worth of brown diamonds that costs 6 KD.

Proud To Be Kuwaiti Not So Proud?

14 Mar 2012  5 Comments

Last Saturday was the last day of Proud to be Kuwaiti (P2BK) event. The place was over packed and they only allowed families in which caused chaos at the main entrance with single guys being denied entry.

While I was there, what caught my eye was that well established international franchises such as Taco Bell and Haagen Dasz where present at the event and in the main hall.

Also, with the event being called "Proud To Be A Kuwaiti" I found it ironic that a Saudi company was present at the event too.

Not only did the event had a number of new startups but also a bunch of familiar faces too. There was a lot of food stuff that were mostly offloaded to a separate tent and not in the main hall.

I’m sure that the 5th year of PB2K broke attendance records but I also think that it lost its identity. I really like the original idea and I hope they get back on track.

KPD

Kuwait Paper Dump just released a really nifty feature, a twitter bot. Ever had to google a restaurant’s phone number? or had to check what they had on their menu? well, its now hassle free with the KPDbot. Its very simple to use and is a great way to get what you want on a mobile device. Menus and other promotions are received as a PDF file which makes viewing them simple.

All you need to do is follow @KPDBot on twitter and then send your inquiry. There are 2 main commands, either you are looking for a phone number or a menu:

  • To get a PDF menu for the Baking Tray, tweet: @KPDBot menu baking tray
  • And to get the phone number for the baking tray you’ll need to tweet: @KPDBot number baking tray

I think this is a service that I’ll be using a lot.

Airforce Open Day

Last Thursday there was an open day event held at Ali Al-Salim Airbase in collaboration with United States Air Force that also had a number of aircraft in the event. A lot of people and a lot of planes there. I saw an F-16, F-18, Hawk, Apache, Black Hawk, Puma, Super Puma, Gazelle, C-130 (Hercules), C-17 among others.

I really think they should do more of these. Or better yet, they should do a proper aviation exhibit that also has civilian airplanes.
