Asrar Al-Qabandi – أسرار القبندي

16 Jan 2010  3 Comments

On January 14, 1991, Asrar Al-Qabandi was murdered. She was shot five times – four bullets to her chest and the fifth bullet between her eyes, and her head sliced in two by an axe as her body dumped in front of her family’s home by the Iraqi’s. This was the fate of one of the braveset women of Kuwait… of the world. She saved hundreds of Kuwaiti’s during the Gulf War, and came back to Kuwait to save more lives even though she knew the Iraqi’s had found out what she had done. This woman has been dead exactly 19 years. And this is the least we can do in saluting the woman who had died saving lives.

I recieved the above as a message yesterday and thought it would only be fitting we remember and recognize Asrar Al-Qabandi’s amazing feats and life saving actions.

Some of her other victories include smuggling weapons from Basra to Kuwait, money and more weapons from Saudi Arabia, single-handedly destroying the monitored telephones and communications set up by the Iraqis, providing targeted Kuwaitis with new ID’s to protect them from harm, providing foreign families with food and money, and taking care of 65 foreign hostages, risking a guaranteed execution.

Read this article to refresh your memory on some of the other stuff Asrar Al-Qabandi had accomplished in this time of vain and anguish.

Nexus One – First Impression

Today I went and got my Nexus One form DHL. The device has a very solid build as you might expect from HTC slightly thinner than the iPhone but has a larger 3.7” screen. The device is multi-touch capable but Google is not supporting the feature nobody knows exactly why , but there are other apps that do. The 1Ghz processor does wonders for the device, but will test it more extensively for the review that should be up by Sunday.

More pics and visual size comparisons to other devices after the break.

DHL Easy Shop – Not So Easy

DHL easy shop

It seems that every time I order a new phone I hit some kind of delay. weirdly, both times I was using DHL.

DHL

First time was with the HTC Hero, now with the Nexus One. My shipment arrived in my mailbox on the 8th and till the 11th it was still processing. I emailed them asking the reason for the delay, they replied saying it is because my shipment arrived on Friday and there is no processing on weekends. The problem is this is not my first time using them and not the first time I had my stuff arrive on a Friday to my mailbox.

And also the shipping weight just doubled when it reached my DHL mailbox from 0.9KG to 1.57KG. so I was supposed to pay for 2lbs now I have to pay for 4lbs (they use 1lb shipping increments). It seems that they are back to using volumetric weight again. Which is a bummer.

Nexus One 2kg

It looks like I’ll be switching back to Aramex as my main courier. Especially after them using volumetric weight again. I cannot trust Amazon to ship my stuff in small packages.

The Good Old Days (Part 2) – Hungry Bunny

10 Jan 2010  28 Comments

After trying Wimpy with N & Heema, and as a part of our “retro-burger” experience,  Hungry Bunny had to be next. Although I didn’t enjoy Wimpy that much, but the idea of eating HB once more was on my mind all the time. I guess I was looking for some “closure” because of the way this whole food chain disappeared :p. Anyway, I didn’t want to try the one in Hawali cause I know it’s not the original one.

AKA Hotel – Times Square

10 Jan 2010  10 Comments

After reading Mark’s post about wanting to go to New York and asking for a good place to stay, I noticed that I didn’t post much about anything other than Shake Shack when I was there.

AKA Hotel

So I’ll be doing some short posts about NY, first will be about the hotel I stayed in, AKA New York.

AKA Lobby

This is not a big hotel, as you can see from the photo above this is the lobby+ reception area. It looks cool but its also small. The hotel is located at 123 West 44th st.  which is very close to Times Square. In fact, it was a 1 minute walk to the middle of Times Square as you can see from the map below.

AKA Hotel Location

The room was amazing, it had a soft modern look to it, not too fancy but looked great. it also had a small kitchen and a huge refrigerator. And the price was excellent for something with that location and that spacious.

Nexus One On The Way

Nexus One Order Confirmation

So, as you might know, I placed my order for the Nexus One on the day it was revealed. And today its in my DHL mailbox.

Nexus One Delivery

So, I placed an order on the 5th, payment cleared on the 6th, shipped on the same day, delivered on the 8th (it took an extra day maybe due to the payment clearing on the 6th after 6pm). Everything is going like clockwork. Hope DHL doesn’t take a long time to deliver it.

I was expecting my Aramex package to arrive 2 days ago, so I wasn’t surprised when I got a text message telling me that its out for delivery. But I was surprised when I saw that they didn’t charge me for customs as my shipment total cost was well over $100 (according to the new Aramex/customs rules).

So, it wasn’t until I got home from work and saw the package I knew why they didn’t charge me the 5%. It seems that Amazon for some reason didn’t include the invoice with the shipment.

Aramex-no-invoice

Lets recap, I didn’t pay the 5% on a $1000 package and my stuff didn’t get delayed at customs just because the invoice wasn’t included. Sweet!

New Look

After posting yesterday, I went and updated a few wordpress plug-ins. after that the my theme got completely screwed. I lost my banner and a few logos and couldn’t get the theme to work again and the blog looked stupid.

I quickly went through a few themes and went with this look. It’s a temporary theme till we get our custom made one.
