I had no idea that our beloved Kinder Surprise that recently went through a makeover is prohibited in the U.S. because it has an inedible object inside it. Even having one while entering the country might result in a $300 fine.

Since 1991, at least 7 children worldwide have died of choking after swallowing the toy inside the Kinder egg.

“JetBlue 171, contact departure,” the unidentified child told one flight.

If i was flying an aircraft coming in or out of JFK and a child’s voice came over from the control tower,  i think i would be a little worried.

An air traffic controller at New York’s JFK airport has been suspended from work after allowing a child to direct flights in and out of one the world’s busiest airports.  The incident took place on February 17 and an investigation has been opened. The child is also recorded saying “Adios, Amigo” to a Mexican pilot leaving the airport.

Accidents can happen with traffic in the air by different planes, maintenance problems, weather etc….  and now children taking over air traffic control….

This is goalkeeper Joao Rafael in the game between Benin vs Mozambique from the African Cup of Nations. He made a “routine” save late in the game almost cost him a goal and a broken neck! Hilarious fail moment from the ACN.

I saw this canon-like Courvoisier Cognac bottle in a random store with lots of old and vintage stuff. I regretted not buying later actually because it does look pretty cool. These are supposedly vintage/antique Afghan guns. They did have some engravings with some weird scriptures on them but you can never be too sure. There were many different sizes and kinds of guns in this shop, as well as coins and other Afghani items.

With Avatar hot on the heels of Titanic as the number one grossing movie of all time, does it mean these classic “bufak” chips (or bofaki as written on the packet) will be replaced by ones with characters from Avatar in the near future? I wonder what Kate Winslet and Leonardo Dicaprio would think of their snack!?

Last but not least, in the “bishts” section i found this men’s jacket/bisht with its very original tiger/jaguar/cheetah print. Sorry about the hazy picture but if you notice in the top right of the picture, the owner was looking at me puzzled as i was autofocusing for the snap. But seriously, Denzel Washington would have looked much better in this than his Chinchilla in American Gangster.

On a more serious note, i enjoyed it and might actually go back in less than a year to buy some classic/vintage junk.

Number 1 : RIM’s breakthru into the Kuwaiti market with their Blackberry’s. Its hard to have a conversation with an owner of these devices without being interrupted by furiously rapid texting or beeps emerging from the phone. Do they realize they can have the same data plan with any smartphone and use any social networking/chatting program to the same effect?

Number 2 : Swarovski covered cars, especially for the guys. I may understand a girl (maybe not even a grown lady) doing this, but when a guy goes and takes his SUV and bling bling’s it all out with the glittery type crystals, thats just uncalled for. Of course at the same time, in a similair parallel universe to where they live in, they continue the “lets-chrome-the sh*t-out-of-my-car” attitude as well. Some people need to be told that we dont live in a rap video.

Number 3 : This one is more complex, and needs dividing into different parts. Its a mix between the spikey, blow dried hair, and the i-wanna-be-david-beckham look. This follows of course the max-the-crap-out-my-scalp-with-gel fad a few years back. Male hairstyles have gotten out of head, use any mall restroom and you will find all the pushing and shoving around the mirror areas with people puffing up their hair and putting subtle touches. There is nothing subtle about your hairstyles.

Of course the bulk of it has come from a single culprit. Able to twist the minds of our youth into the biggest and loudest as well as the weirdest hairstyles…. the discovery of the hair dryer!

Number 4 : Our beautiful ladies were determined not be outdone by this bold move from the masculine side, so they introduced the alien hijab. I have heard they place yoghurt cups inside to hold the position, my conscience doest want to believe that. They would have made Dan Aykroyd and Co. in Coneheads proud. Behold the masterpieces to come.

Number 5 : Facebook. When your boss at work is a 50 year old man with no tech/social networking background and adds you as a friend to Facebook, then something is acutely wrong. I dont see you or talk to you outside of work, why would i want to be your buddy on facebook?  The social networking scene in Kuwait has boomed in 2009 along with the hair styles.

With all the fuss and dangers of H1N1 swine flu, you wouldnt expect people to be paying up to  700 British Pounds for a pig. These micro pigs,  grow to be about 12-16 inches tall and between 40-65 pounds in weight. With a life span of up to 18 years, even celebrity actors have been snapping them up (Harry Potter actor Rupert Grint is one of them).  They are being marketed as the perfect, low maintennance pets. On Oct. 17, 1814, a ruptured tank at the Meux and Company Brewery unleashed more than 3,500 barrels of beer onto the streets of London, creating a wave of beer that knocked down walls, flooded basements and demolished houses. For years and years alot of us have heard about subliminal messages in cartoons and animations. So what are subliminal messages and how do they work?

Subliminal messages in movies and television take two forms. The first and most controversial is a few frames added to a movie or television show that contain a message. The second type of subliminal message is the inclusion of an object in the movie set which can contain a message that is theoretically interpreted by the subconscious.

A movie in the theater is projected at 24 frames per second. This rate of projection insures that the film is interpreted as “flicker less” by the human brain. The human eye and brain can not interpret action that occurs at less than 1/30th of a second. The projection rate insures that the human neural system can interpret the action on the screen without being jumpy or starting and stopping.

Subliminal messages can be a few frames of message that are inserted into a scene in the movie. While there is some debate as to whether subliminal messages truly are effective, they are inserted into many movies as either a product promotion or an attempt to heighten the sensation that is created in the scene.

In theory, while the eye can not visually see the few frames of subliminal message edited into the movie the subconscious receives the message and responds to the message. When an object is inserted into the scene, the eye may be following the action of the scene while the subconscious responds to the object and this response is transmitted to the conscious. link

In recent times, most of the uncovering of subliminal messages are found in Disney movies. And surprisingly enough, most of them are of sexual content. Which makes it even worse since these are usually made for children. I was expecting to find alot of different subliminal messages. Reading Ansam’s post about an Alladin song which included the line “Where they cut off your ear, if they don’t like your face… It’s barbaric, but hey, it’s home”, i thought when i did the research i would find subliminal messages on the same level. Politics, war and present day crisis’s was not to be found, so far at least. Aladdin’s song was a portrayal of Arabs as barbaric and uncivilised by the above quote. Yet, if you google subliminal messages in Disney, you will find the same 6 parts from the same movies. I was surprised, some debatable to me, but the fact that site after site, and blog after blog all mention the same messages has to have some truth in it.
